Kids Update: Kal Crawls, Sen Dreams!
Kallan's official first day of formal crawling was Dec. 21 -- my parents' 40th anniversary. I'll never forget it because the kids and I spent an entire day at their condo trying to get it ready for their arrival, surprising them with a cake, a decorated Christmas tree, and Kal's first crawl was that morning, all the way across the great room, right to the Christmas tree! What a juggle that day was.
Since then, he has been a crawling maniac, though he often prefers to be walked to his destination (holding both hands). He is up the stairs like a rocket (though does not know how to go down, just gets a big smile on his face and DIVES! Yeah, that's fun.). He is into everything, our little curious kitten. He loves opening any door, cabinet, drawer, pulling pieces from wooden puzzles, pushing buttons on the phone (he called the Time Warmer operator the other day). He'll crawl over and into anything, with no fear. And the bath, heaven for him, doesn't even flinch when water is poured over his head and gets in his eyes. He is a wild man! And a hoot, smiling and laughing or screeching at will, making hand gestures and bits of words (Mama, Dada, and we think some forms of banana (nana), PaDa, and Senna (dedda)).
In the past month his first four teeth sprouted, and two more are coming in, and he's now able to hold a chunk of pear or soggy homemade bread and take bites, and did this once also with a potato. Spits out anything pureed (carrot, apple), no way, and currently flings banana on the floor whenever we try to give pieces to him. And, generally speaking, he wants to be anywhere Senna is, doing anything she is doing. Oh, and he loves to watch anything that moves and makes noise -- cars, trucks, vacuums, trains...

Senna is still living in the fabulous world of her imagination. She is pretty much constantly either pretending or wishing. From the moment she walks into our room at 6am each morning, "Mommy, Daddy, let's pretend you're big kids and I'm a baby and we are at..." and we're off!
Her wishing, when not wanting to be a baby, has been focused in part on the opposite: when she is "big." She has told us she plans to live with Kallan in a house next door or "down the lane" from me and Alex. She plans to have a saltwater swimming pool, a convertible, a big backyard, and a cat. Her cat's name depends on its color. If it is orange it will be Star, if it is white it will be Snow, and if it is brown or grey, it will be Otis. We will have to live nearby because I won't be able to sleep over with my cat allergies.
Her dreaming is still focused on her incredible imaginary world of Pacha (our friend and Senna's birth doula Lauren told us Pacha means "earth" in South American native languages!). In Sen's Pacha, they eat sweets all they want, but they also have lots of good healthy food. They have all kinds of special rooms: a chick room, a kitten room, a craft room, a swinging room... She has friends there named Lucy and Jason. And in Pacha there are no food allergies. (sigh)
As Sen is about to turn 4 this week, we are seeing these glimpses of her growing up. Just in the past week or two she has taken to extended periods of playing alone in her room (!!!!!!). Lots of pretending in the mirror, singing, playing with dolls. And most mornings she comes downstairs and gets right to work at her fabulous craft table (thanks to Grandma Karen for providing all the organizers). Reading with her is still big, and she is into real stories now, so fun. And she is finally staying without Mom at our Monday morning co-op preschool group without much hassle, and enjoying herself and looking forward to it each week (hooray!).
For her birthday this week, we had talked of going to Legoland with Nana, who is coming down from LA. But, when I told Sen that it was probably going to be very rainy all week and on her birthday, and would she like to have a back-up plan, she answered, "What if we have a bake a cake station and a Kallan stair climbing station with Nana and play at home?" (she is into "stations" from our co-op, where they have different craft, building, etc stations). Not even an issue for her. Oh, how I love how she has embraced our desire to keep life simple and enjoy the small pleasures!
